Sophomore boys dealt three losses

A slow start to the game put Mendota in a huge hole it could not dig out from as Rock Falls sailed to a 56-28 win in sophomore boys’ basketball action on Feb. 17 at the MHS gym.

The Trojans were outscored, 12-1, in the opening stanza and never recovered. The offense heated up in the second period, but Rock Falls kept its foot on the gas pedal and owned a 31-15 halftime lead. Mendota was outscored, 25-13, in the second half.

Jose Rocha provided seven points for the Trojans, while Isaac Guzman, Ryne Strouss and Izaiah Nanez each had five markers.

Winnebago sprinted out to a huge first-quarter lead and went on to down the Trojans, 67-34, on Feb. 19 at Winnebago.

The Indians owned a 21-5 lead after the first period, and while Mendota’s offense heated up with 19 second-quarter points, it wasn’t enough to overcome its slow start.

“Winnebago was making everything they threw at the basket and there was nothing we could do to stop them,” commented MHS coach Nick Ganz.

Guzman paced Mendota with 13 points, followed by Nanez with seven and Strouss with six.

Genoa-Kingston took out the Trojans, 57-39, on Feb. 20 at the MHS gym.

Mendota was only down 28-23 at intermission, but its offense went cold in the third quarter when it scored only two points compared to 15 for the Cogs.

“We couldn’t buy a basket in the third and Genoa couldn’t miss,” said Ganz.

Nanez, Rocha and Guzman all had eight points for the Trojans.
