Somonauk and Rock Falls each put up big numbers in the first quarter and both teams went on to outgun Mendota in varsity boys’ basketball contests last week.
Somonauk came out smoking and ran away with a 69-50 victory over the Trojans on Jan. 15 at the MHS gym.
The Bobcats connected on four three-pointers and poured in 26 first-quarter points to grab a 26-15 advantage after the opening stanza. Somonauk’s lead ballooned to 22 (42-20) at the half and the count stood at 56-35 after three.
Emiliano Arteaga pumped in 15 points and Cole Stremlau provided 14 markers to lead the Trojans. Somonauk had four players reach double figures, led by Liam Roberts with 25.

The Trojans were overwhelmed by Rock Falls, 69-42, in Big Northern Conference action on Jan. 18 at Rock Falls. Mendota fell to 2-19 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Rockets blasted off to a 28-6 first-quarter lead and set the dial on cruise control over the remainder of the game. They led 43-16 at intermission and 56-28 after three frames.
Chris Sandoval’s six points topped Trojan scorers, while Stremlau, Emiliano Arteaga and Emilio Perez had five points apiece.
