Mendota opened up its Big Northern Conference volleyball season with a 25-11, 25-16 loss to Rock Falls on Aug. 29 at the MHS gym.
Myak Boelk topped the Spikers with four kills and Abby Phalen led with five service points. Also, Reiss Buettner collected 14 assists, Larkin O’Donnell had four digs and Jaelyn Fitzgerald produced two blocks. Phalen and Alex Barrera added three kills apiece.

The Spikers won two of five matches in the Oregon Tournament on Sept. 1-2.
Forreston defeated Mendota, 25-22, 25-16 in the opener. Phalen topped the club with four kills, Brittany Menzel supplied six service points, Buettner posted seven assists and Barrera had seven digs. Peyton Baird and Menzel added two blocks apiece.
Mendota responded with a 25-21, 25-22 verdict over East Peoria. Leading the way for the Spikers were Phalen with eight kills and two blocks, O’Donnell with seven service points, Buettner with 21 assists and Boelk with seven digs.
Lena-Winslow took down the Spikers, 25-20, 25-20. Phalen supplied seven kills, Buettner had 17 assists and seven points, and Boelk picked up 10 points and eight digs.
Mendota dropped a 25-19, 26-24 decision to Freeport Aquin. Statistical leaders for the Spikers were Phalen with five kills, Boelk with five kills and five points, Menzel with five points, Buettner with 12 assists and O’Donnell with 11 digs.
The Spikers (2-6) needed three sets to topple Pearl City, 24-26, 25-10, 16-14. Phalen had a fine all-around game with 11 kills, two blocks and nine service points. Buettner also had nine points and eight assists, Menzel collected nine assists and Barrera had 12 digs.
