Rock Falls downs MHS golfers; Trojans edge Ottawa

Rock Falls’ golfers took advantage of a short-handed Mendota squad and defeated the Trojans, 165-179, in a Big Northern Conference dual meet on Sept. 24 at the Mendota Golf Club.

The match was a battle for a second-place finish in the conference. The Trojans ended in third place with an 8-2 record.

Zeke Hessenberger and Ethan Hanaman led the Trojans with scores of 43. Logan Brandner turned in a round of 46, followed by Colton Scheppers at 47, Jack Beetz at 50 and Mateo Escatel at 53. Mendota played without its No. 1 golfer, Taylor Joyce.

Mendota pulled out a win in the junior varsity match, 198-206. MHS finished with a 9-1 conference mark.

Noah DeLong paced the victory with a 43. Liam McGann checked in second for the Trojans with a 51, while Clayton Buffington (52), Owen Ossman (52), Luke Ross (57) and Shea Doughty (62) completed the lineup.

The rest of Mendota’s golfers divided into Purple vs. Gold and the Purple team was victorious, 233-249.

Taking the course for the Purple squad were Kevin Lewis (53), Braden McPheeters (55), Doughty (62), Dylan Denault (63) and Jack Mikolasek (69).

Players comprising the Gold team included Drake Dennis (57), Landon Kreiser (60), Dominik Stamberger (64), Cayden Escatel (68) and Juan Delao (76).


The Trojans slipped past Ottawa, 167-169, on Sept. 26 at Deer Park Golf Course.

Eight players made up the MHS lineup and Joyce led the way with a 39. Hanaman was a close second with a 40, followed by Scheppers at 42 and Beetz at 46. Completing the card for the Trojans were Hessenberger (48), Brandner (51), DeLong (51) and Ross (52).

The junior varsity match was also a tight one, with Mendota prevailing, 198-201.

The Trojans’ top four scores belonged to Kreiser (48), Mateo Escatel (49), McGann (50) and Ossman (51). Also participating were McPheeters (55), Dennis (56), Buffington (58) and Delao (71).
