OGLESBY - The University of Illinois, LaSalle County Extension 4-H is sharing in the excitement of the upcoming FIRST Tech Challenge Regional Robotics Tournament at Illinois Valley Community College on Saturday, Jan. 6 from 1-3:30 p.m. The LaSalle County 4-H Advanced Robotics Club along with FIRST Illinois Robotics will co-sponsor the event. The public is welcome and encouraged to come to IVCC to watch the competition. This event is free to the public. A concession stand will be available for refreshments.

Local students have built robots using engineering skills with FIRST Tech Challenge FIRST Relic Recovery. Area young people, ages 12 to 18, are among 46,000 students around the world who have risen to the 2017-2018 FIRST Tech Challenge Competition.

FTC is designed for those who want to compete head-to-head using a sports model. Teams of up to 15 students are responsible for designing, building and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using Java for Android Studio or Java based MIT App Inventor. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategies and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for robot performance as well as for community outreach, design and other real-world accomplishments.

In February, local and west central Illinois student teams will go head-to-head, putting more than 17 weeks’ worth of research, design and programming to the test in a division meet. That meet, which will determine team rankings for the qualifier league competition, will take place on Feb. 10 at Manual Academy, 811 S. Griswold St., Peoria. The official competition will begin at 10:30 p.m. Awards will be presented after the robotics competition and presentation judging.

At the League Championship, teams hope to win honors and recognition and advance to the FTC Illinois State Championship at Elgin Community College on Feb. 23 and 24. The season will culminate with the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship in Houston, Texas April 18-21 and in Detroit April 25-28.
