MENDOTA - Robert “Bob” G. Sweger, 91, of Mendota, died April 27, 2017 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in LaSalle.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3 at Faith Bible Fellowship Church in Troy Grove with Rev. Bill Ultch officiating. Burial will be at Troy Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to services at church. Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota is handling the arrangements.

Bob was born Feb. 1, 1926 in rural Troy Grove to Albert and Lavinia Sweger. He married Nila Campeggio on May 15, 1965. She preceded him in death in 2011.

Survivors include one son, Randy (Crystal) Sweger of Mendota; a stepson, Mike (Barb) Campeggio of South Carolina; a stepdaughter, Chris (Bill) Beetz of Mendota; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Near of Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Clarence Sweger; one sister, Jean Sweger; and two stepbrothers, Bill and Stanley Smith.

Bob attended Mendota High School and served in the U.S. Army as a MP in India from 1944-1946. He retired from Del Monte after 35 years. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, woodworker and gardener. He loved playing bingo and euchre with his friends at Stonecroft. He volunteered for many years at Nightingale’s Closet and was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church.
