MENDOTA – Rev. Edward R. Hughes, 83, formerly of West Brooklyn and Sublette, died June 3, 2017 at Heritage Manor, Mendota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 7 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Sublette with the Most Reverend Bishop David Malloy officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Sublette. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6 at the church with the rosary at 7 p.m. and from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to Mass on June 7. Arrangements are being handled by the Mihm-Jones Funeral Home, Amboy.

Father Edward was born Jan. 19, 1934 in Chicago to Edward J. and Irene (Rowland) Hughes.

Survivors include his brother priests and special friends of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and St. Mary Parish.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Father Edward was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1958 by Most Reverend Loras Lane. He attended Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary, Chicago before entering St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, Md. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Joseph Parish, Harvard. His other assignments were parochial vicar at St. Joseph Parish, Freeport; parochial vicar at Holy Angels Parish, Aurora; parochial vicar at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Crystal Lake; parochial vicar, St. Anne Parish, Dixon; pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Fulton and St. Patrick Parish, Albany; pastor of St. Rita Parish, Rockford; pastor of St. Mary Parish, West Brooklyn and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Sublette. He retired from active ministry on July 1, 2009.
