MENDOTA - What a sight to see - luminaria bags lit up after sundown all around the Relay for Life track - all part of a desire to remember family members and friends. Purchasing a luminaria in honor or in memory of someone affected by cancer serves as an important reminder that there is still so much work to be done in the fight against this disease.

Luminaria donations count toward both individual and team fundraising goals and may be given in advance of the Upper Illinois Valley Relay for Life event or may be purchased the day of the Relay.

A luminaria bag donation is $10 per bag. The bag may be decorated by the purchaser with pictures, glitter, stickers or text about the person who is being honored. You also may choose to have a member of the Relay Luminaria Team print names on the bags for you.

Purchase luminaria bags before the Relay event by calling Brenda Grobe at (815) 993-1625 or purchase online at www.RelayFor Life.org/uiv.il. Any questions may be directed to Grobe as well. Individuals who would like pictures of their loved ones projected on a large display screen during the Luminaria Walk should contact Grobe by phone or e-mail pictures to her at sbgrobe@frontier.com by Tuesday, July 10.

Luminaria bags may be purchased on the day of Relay beginning at 4 p.m. by stopping at the luminaria table and will be available until 8 p.m. that evening. A special lighting ceremony for the bags will begin at 9 p.m. The luminarias provide a visible reminder to all those present that family and friends who have been lost to cancer are remembered and that we celebrate those who have survived.

The Upper Illinois Valley’s Relay for Life event will take place on Saturday, July 13 beginning at 6 p.m. on the men’s softball and youth soccer fields at Lake Mendota. The public is invited to attend to enjoy food vendors, games, entertainment, a Dessert Walk, Silent Auction and raffles. Those on a team will have additional activities that are planned throughout the night. The Relay’s closing ceremony will be at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, July 14.

In nine years Relay has raised just under $1 million to fight cancer. Please help us “March to a Million” by purchasing a luminaria. Funds raised not only support cancer research but provide countless free cancer support services directly to Illinois Valley residents.
