Cold shooting plagued the Mendota Trojans in a 56-36 loss to Princeton in a nonconference game on Nov. 28 at Princeton.

The game was tight after one period, with Princeton leading 10-8, but the tide turned in the second quarter when the Trojans put up just five points compared to 14 for the Tigers. The home team was up by 21 (44-23) after three frames.

Ben Bokus was Mendota’s lone double-digit scorer with 10 points. Blake Stamberger added nine points and led with 12 rebounds. Ethan Ruiz handed out five assists.

The Trojans shot 29 percent from the floor, 44 percent from the free throw line and had 32 rebounds, while Princeton made 42 percent of its field goal attempts, 75 percent of its free throws and had 35 boards. Mendota turned the ball over 15 times, five more than Princeton.

The Trojans opened up Big Northern Conference play with a 71-50 loss at Byron on Dec. 1.

The game was decided in the first eight minutes when the Tigers sprinted out to a 25-11 lead and coasted the rest of the way. Byron led 44-22 at intermission.

Bokus led the point chart with 12 and Stamberger added 11. They pair also were tops in rebounding with Stamberger grabbing 10 and Bokus eight.

Mendota connected on 39 percent of its field goals and 53 percent of its free throws, while Byron shot 47 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the line. The Trojans (2-4, 0-1) owned a 34-28 rebounding edge and committed 21 turnovers to 15 for Byron.
