ROCKFORD – Explore Pokémon, anime, and Hello Kitty during Konnichiwa Means Hello event at Discovery Center on Friday, June 23 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Investigate how kawaii, the Japanese word for “cute,” is a driving force in Japanese culture. Enjoy Pokémon themed stations while making your own trainer cards. Then role play as trainers and complete your journey by collecting “gym badges” at each station. Try your pen at calligraphy, learn to draw like an anime artist and pick up some Japanese words while enjoying our temporary exhibition Hello from Japan!
The highlight of the event will be exciting live Japanese drumming performances by Tsukasa Taiko Community Ensemble at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tsukasa Taiko is a community arts program in Chicago whose mission is, through teaching and performing, to preserve, develop, and pass on the traditional concepts of Japanese art as a cultural legacy. Check out their skills on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AynMOWJ5bQ
All activities are included with museum admission - $8 per person; free to members and children under age 2.
