ROCK ISLAND – Abby Phalen, a three-sport standout from Mendota High School, has announced her plans to continue her education and athletic career at Augustana College in Rock Island. She will enroll in the fall and join coach Kelly Bethke’s Viking volleyball program.
Phalen earned a total of 12 varsity letters in three sports at Mendota, including four in coach John Holzman’s volleyball program.
A 5-9 outside hitter, Phalen was a unanimous All-Big Northern Conference selection this year and earned first-team All-Area honors from the La Salle News Tribune. She had 255 kills and 225 digs, along with 24 blocks and 36 service aces for a Spiker outfit that finished the season 27-7-1.
Phalen was a second team All-Big Northern pick as a junior and earned all-conference honorable mention as a sophomore.
Also a four-year letter winner in basketball and track & field, Phalen garnered all-conference and all-area honorable mention on the hardwood as a senior and qualified for state in the triple jump as a freshman.
She is the daughter of Tim and Jan Phalen of Mendota. A straight-A student, Illinois State Scholar and member of the National and Spanish Honor societies, she is planning on majors in biology and Spanish at Augustana.
Phalen joins a Viking program that owns a pair of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championships and has produced one CCIW Player of the Year and four CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Bethke will be in her sixth season at Augustana in 2019 and has guided the Vikings to a 96-60 record during her first five years – a .615 winning percentage that ranks second-highest in the 45-year history of the program.
