Paw Paw School Board discusses consolidation report, increases fees

PAW PAW – The results of the consolidation report were discussed at the recent Paw Paw Schools Board of Education meeting.

Members was felt that the report was flawed. The first study they submitted recommended consolidation. As that report contained many inaccuracies and omissions, a revised report was requested. The revised report also contains inaccuracies, and did not take into account many of the current assets of both Earlville and Paw Paw school districts.

The State of Illinois is expected to make all school districts Property Tax Limitation districts, thus negating the inconsistency between the two districts. Paw Paw School District now has a surplus budget. Further discussion with the Earlville School Board will be conducted.

Increased fees for the 2017-2018 school year were approved. Student fees for grades 1-12 were set at $75; kindergarten fees are $55. Elementary lunch will now be $2.25; high school lunch will be $2.50. Other miscellaneous fees were also set.

In other news:

The school board calendar for 2017-2018 was set. Meetings will be held the third Monday of every month, except February, which will be Feb. 12, 2018.

Use of the high school gym for Zumba classes from June 1 to July 31 was approved.

Repairs to the school roof are ongoing.

The class of 2018 presented their proposal for their Senior Class Trip on a Carnival Cruise ship to Cozumel, Mexico. The class has $16,000 in their trip account. Students who have participated in the class fund-raisers over the years will be able to use that money to cover the $517 cost of the trip.

A fourth grade parent voiced concern that her student has not had a hardcover math book to bring home for the last two years. She emphasized that not all homes have computers to access math homework. It was explained that the student needs to sign-out a book, as is required for all textbooks, and would then have a textbook to take home.

Erin Oates, high school librarian has received a $3,000 grant from Lowe's to upgrade the library.

Mrs. Jamroch with the Leadership Council and PTO are planning a back-to-school bash for Aug. 5 to offer haircuts, physicals, dental exams, and school supplies. Sponsorship has been received from Target, Wal-Mart, Paw Paw Bank, and others.
