MENDOTA – Newly elected Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) members Jessica Correa, president; Susana Terrazas, co-vice president; Carmen Correa, co-vice president/treasurer; and Selene Jaramillo, secretary met in the District 289 Education Center with Beth Wackerlin, director of teaching and learning; and Jessica Kreiser, director of student services, on June 11 to work on details of a summer reading program for ELL students.
"This is a big deal," stated Kreiser on the first-time committee involvement of the parents.
School districts that have Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) programs are required to establish a BPAC. The committee participates in the planning, operation, and evaluation of the TBE program. The committee is comprised of parents of children in the TBE programs and other interested community members and will host events for families of students in the bilingual education program, such as the summer reading program.
The mission of the BPAC is for parents, staff and the school district to work together in order to meet the needs of all bilingual students. "The overall goal is to empower parents to have control over their own committee. It is a partnership," said Beth Wackerlin, District 289 curriculum director.
Committee members will meet four times throughout the school year.
