MENDOTA –Thanks to Don and Val King, residents of rural Manlius and advocates for wellness in rural communities, the OSF HealthCare Foundation has received a generous donation. Funding will be used to purchase a mobile health center to benefit residents of Bureau, Henry, LaSalle and Putnam counties served by OSF HealthCare.
“We are proud to support OSF, as they have been a life saver for our family,” stated Don and Val King. “Since 1983, they have been able to save the lives of our son, father, niece and great-niece. Our family believes in paying good deeds back and today, we are proud to be able to give back through our donation for the mobile health center.”
Modeled from the OSF Care-A-Van program in Peoria, the mobile health center will be used to connect residents with screenings, immunizations, health education, and even assist with tasks such as signing up for health coverage and exploring advanced care planning. Peoria’s mobile unit is no stranger to the I-80 corridor as it has been featured in Ottawa’s Riverfest Parade, provided care to residents of Streator, and offered screenings and services at health fairs throughout the region.
The new mobile health center will travel to places where people work, pray and play to connect patients with care when they might not be able to get to the doctor on their own – or even know where to start when they have a health need. The mobile unit will work with employers, churches, schools and community agencies to break down obstacles many rural residents may face.
“The addition of a mobile health center to the region will allow OSF HealthCare to provide services in populations that have barriers to the traditional medical structure,” stated Ken Beutke, President of OSF HealthCare Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa. “We are changing the way health care is provided in rural communities, and the Kings’ gift has presented a necessary resource as we transition our focus to population health in the communities where we have been called to serve.”
The King family has been active throughout the region for the past 35 years. “We believe in rural America and are proud to call it our home,” they stated. “We hope that OSF HealthCare, with the new mobile health center, may continue working to improve the health of the citizens in our rural communities.”
The mobile health center is slated for arrival in late summer with services made available to communities throughout the region by early fall.
