Newman downs Trojan F-S gridders

STERLING – Sterling Newman posted a 44-7 win over Mendota in freshman-sophomore football action on Oct. 18 at Sterling.

The Comets owned an 8-0 lead after the first quarter, scoring on a 13-yard run and adding the two-point conversion. Newman tacked on two more TDs in the second period on runs of 1 and 78 yards, and it was successful on both two-point tries.

Newman tallied three more touchdowns in the second half. One came in the third quarter on a 13-yard run and two scores in the fourth frame were on runs of 2 and 1 yard.

Mendota was able to avoid being shut out when it scored with 34 seconds left in the game on a 30-yard pass from Justin Randolph to Braiden Freeman. Damian Medina kicked the extra point.

The Trojans (0-4) finished with 99 total yards in the contest. They rushed for 20 and passed for 79. Randolph completed four of nine passes, with two being caught by Freeman for 61 yards. Newman gained 301 yards, all on the ground.
