PERU – The public is invited to a screening of the film documentary, “Algren” and to meet the filmmaker/director, Michael Caplan, on Saturday, March 30. The showing will be at 1:30 p.m. followed by a discussion of the film with Caplan at the Westclox ARTworks Center in the west wing of the Westclox building, 400 Fifth St., Peru.

Caplan’s film explores the life and legacy of American writer, novelist, poet and journalist Nelson Algren (1909-1981), who grew up in Chicago and received the first National Book Award for “The Man with the Golden Arm” that also was made into a film in 1955. The documentary premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival in 2014.

Caplan is a Chicago-based independent film director and producer. He also is an Associate Professor in the Cinema and Television Arts Department at Columbia College Chicago.

In 2015, he was among 10 Chicago filmmakers commissioned by the Chicago International Film Festival to write and direct one-minute films that played before screenings during the festival. He wrote and directed A Magical Vision, a film focusing on Eugene Burger, the internationally acclaimed magician, philosopher, and guru of the magical arts. He also wrote and directed Stones from the Soil, a film about his father’s escape from the Nazis, that aired on national PBS.

Caplan currently is producing Microcosm, a documentary television series that showcases the ocean in a new way: from the previously unexplored perspective of the microuniverse. He also produced three feature films, including The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, acclaimed by The New York Times as “praiseworthy, intense, frenetic, frank, and touching… preserving not just a performance but the spirit of a time.”

“We are honored to have Michael Caplan join us at the Westclox ARTworks Center,” said Chris Coughlin, president of NCI ARTworks. “His experience in the making of ‘Algren’ and, in fact, his work as an independent filmmaker in general will be of great interest to documentary film enthusiasts in our region.”

The events are sponsored by North Central Illinois (NCI) ARTworks. There is a $5 suggested donation at the door. Visit www.nciartworks.com and click on “Films at the Factory” to reserve seats.
