MENDOTA – Each year, the Mendota High School Fine Arts Department and Mendota Area Senior Services (MASS) team up to put on the annual Pork Chop Dinner and Jazz Concert. This year, the event will be held on Wednesday, March 29 at the Mendota Civic Center.

Pork chop dinners will be available for purchase from 4:30-7 p.m. Dinners include a choice of one or two pork chops plus baked beans, potato salad, apple sauce, dinner roll, and cookie. Drinks are also available for those that eat in. Advance tickets are $8 for one pork chop and $10 for two pork chops. There is also a kid’s hot dog meal for $3. Tickets are $1 more at the door. Proceeds go to help support MASS with transportation and support services provided to local senior citizens.

The Jazz Concert portion of the evening will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature the Mendota High School Jazz Band, Mendota High School Vocal Jazz Ensembles, and the Alumni & Friends Jazz Band. The Northbrook Middle School Jazz Band will also perform on this concert for the first time in several years.

Also featured at this concert will be Alex Beltran, a well-known jazz artist in the Chicagoland area. Beltran received his Bachelor degree from Indiana University and his Master Degree from DePaul University where he studied with David Baker, Jim Snidero, Mark Colby and many others. In 2008, Beltran made Chicago his home and quickly became an active member of the local and regional music scenes. Beltran’s quintet, Merge, has released two albums of original modern jazz that have received praise from musicians and critics alike. Dan Healy of Chicago Jazz Magazine says his album “Delays” is “both challenging and accessible, this is one of the best new releases of the year.”

Beltran has performed in both large and small venues across the country, under his own name and with musicians such as Jeff Hamilton, Phil Woods, Tim Ries, Ira Sullivan, Luis Bonilla, John Fedchok, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, the Chicago Yestet, and many others. In addition to his busy performing schedule, Beltran is proud to be a Vandoren Performing Artist and maintains an active studio, helping a younger generation discover the beauty of music.
