PROPHETSTOWN – Morrison proved why it was the top seed in the regional as it coasted to a 12-0 victory over the Mendota Lady Trojans in the semifinals of the Prophetstown Class 2A Regional Softball Tournament on May 16. The game came to halt after the top half of the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.

The Lady Trojans had only three baserunners the entire game – all on walks – as Morrison’s Lauren Rice fired a no-hitter. She struck out nine in leading her team to its 18th win in 19 games.

Two of Mendota’s walks came in the first inning as Ryann Avery drew a one-out free pass, went to second on a ground out and to third on a passed ball. Reiss Buettner also walked, but both runners were left stranded.

With one out in the third, Morgan Marquis coaxed a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, but that’s as far as she got.

Rice retired the final eight batters, five of them on strikeouts. She did not allow a ball to leave the infield the entire game.

Morrison was equally as effective at the plate, scoring three runs in each of its times at-bat.

All nine Fillie batters came to the plate in the first as they scored three unearned runs. Brooke Stralow’s two-run single was the big blow in the frame.

Two doubles and a triple produced three more runs in the second, then two Mendota errors led to three more unearned runs for Morrison in the third inning. Jaeden Workman drove in a pair with a double.

The Fillies eclipsed the 10-run mark in the fourth frame as Emma Sitzmore led off with a home run to spark the uprising.

Rylee Klema was in the circle for the Lady Trojans and allowed 11 hits and just three earned runs. She walked one and struck out two.

Mendota finished the season with a 16-15 record.
