AMBOY – Five Mendota wrestlers competed in the Amboy Junior Varsity Tournament on Jan. 5.
Ethan Hanaman turned in a second-place performance for Mendota in the 120-pound category. He won his first match, 13-9, over Dylan Daniels of Amboy, and then lost a 10-0 decision to Jerill Hills of Rock Falls in the championship match.
Mendota’s Aaron Garza finished in fifth place in the 220-pound division. Garza won two of the four matches he wrestled. He began with a pin win over Cole Jones of Dixon in 1:37. Esai Olade of Sterling pinned Garza in 1:48 and then Charles Helfrich of Dixon pinned Garza in 1:01. Garza topped off the day with a pin over Tristan Shaw of Rock Falls at the 2:33 mark to take fifth place.
Three other Trojan wrestlers did not place. Ty Connelly posted a 1-2 record at 145 pounds, while Kaitlyn Jezewski dropped both of her matches at 145. Sam Lawrence was beaten twice at 152 pounds.
There were 13 teams in the tournament with Dixon claiming the top spot with 240 points. Mendota was 10th with 35 points.
