MHS's Connelly advances to Oregon Wrestling Sectional

PLANO – One Mendota Trojan wrestler extended his season after the team competed in the Plano Class 1A Regional on Feb. 7-8.

Ty Connelly qualified for the sectional after finishing third in the 160-pound division. The top three wrestlers in each weight class earn berths in the next round.

The MHS junior won three of four matches at the regional. He began the action with a pin win over Wil Collins of Plano at the 1:41 mark. Connelly dropped a 9-1 decision to Isaac Marques of Seneca in the semifinals before bouncing back with a pair of wins. He posted a hard-fought 2-0 decision over Ben Sylvester of Putnam County and then secured a 17-2 victory over Jared Banister of Somonauk in the third-place bout.

Three other Trojan wrestlers participated in the regional. Ethan Hanaman posted a 1-2 record at 120 pounds, Kailyn Jezewski dropped both of her matches at 138 pounds and Sam Lawrence went 1-2 at 152 pounds.

Sandwich won the team title with 219.5 points. Mendota finished 10th out of 11 teams with 19.5 points.

Connelly advances to the Oregon Sectional to be held Saturday, Feb. 15.
