Mendota’s sophomore boys’ basketball team was in control from the opening tip in cruising past Bureau Valley, 57-16, in a Three Rivers Conference contest on Jan. 17 at the MHS gym.
The Trojans raced out to an 11-2 lead after the first quarter and held a 29-10 halftime advantage. The count was 49-16 after three periods and then Bureau Valley went scoreless in the fourth.
Aden Tillman fired in four three-pointers on his way to a 16-point performance for the Trojans. Domenic Richey also hit double-digits with 10 tallies, while Evan McPheeters provided eight markers.
Kewanee posted a 51-38 triumph over the Trojans in conference action on Jan. 20 at the MHS gym. Mendota has a 3-3 league mark.
The visitors opened up a 16-10 first-quarter lead and maintained that same margin (26-20) at intermission. Kewanee began to pull away in the third quarter when it outscored the Trojans, 15-9.
Tillman led the MHS offense with 13 points as he dropped in three shots from beyond the arc. Dane Doyle and Alex Beetz provided eight points apiece for the Trojans.
It was a tale of two halves as Mendota gave up a big lead and lost at Stillman Valley, 53-46, on Jan. 21. MHS is 12-10 on the season.
The Trojans led 19-10 after one and 32-21 at the half before being outscored, 32-14, in the second half.
Doyle led the Mendota offense with 20 points, connecting on four shots from three-point territory. Braiden Freeman netted 10 points, while Cam Kelly drained three trifectas and added nine points.
