MHS soccer team piling up wins

MENDOTA – The Mendota boys’ soccer team kept the machine rolling with a 7-0 shutout over Winnebago in Big Northern Conference action on Sept. 13 at the MHS field.

Mendota scored a pair of goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead to intermission. Joel Escatel got the Trojans on the board at 25:38 off an assist from Jack Massey. Then five minutes later, Massey rammed home a goal assisted by Yahir Diaz.

Massey continued the Mendota scoring with back-to-back goals to start the second half to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Finishing off the scoring were Josue Arteaga, Ivan Figueroa and Eddie Perez. Escatel and Anthony Tolentino picked up assists.

Logan Eppard was in goal for the Trojans to pitch the shutout.

The Trojans posted a 3-2 come-from-behind win over LaSalle-Peru on Sept. 17 at the MHS field.

L-P scored the first two goals of the game before Mendota got on the board at the 19:09 mark on a tally by Emiliano Arteaga.

The contest remained that way until 43:42 when Mendota’s Luis Delao found the back of the net to tie the score at 2-2. Escatel got the assist.

Each team went scoreless for the next 25 minutes when Escatel booted home the game-winner at 68:42.

Joel Figueroa was between the pipes for the Trojans.

The Illinois High School Association has announced that Mendota will host a Class 1A Soccer Regional Tournament. Regionals are to be played Oct. 5-13. The regional pairings will be announced at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.

The winner of the Mendota Regional will advance to the Chillicothe (IVC) Sectional. Sectionals are scheduled for Oct. 16-20.
