MHS soccer remains unbeaten with three wins

JV squad claims Oregon Tournament title

Mendota continued its winning ways on the soccer field with a 9-2 triumph over Riverdale on Aug. 29 at Port Byron.

A pair of freshmen led the attack with Isaac Diaz and Cesar Casas booting in three goals apiece. Casas also provided a pair of assists. Johan Cortez scored twice for the Trojans and had an assist, while Angel Orozco tallied the other goal. David Casas (two) and Mauricio Salinas (one) also assisted in the scoring.

Mateo Goy picked up one save in goal.

Mendota was a 6-0 winner in the junior varsity contest. Emmanuel Medina collected a pair of goals, while Emiliano Medina, Luis Ramirez, Mauricio Salinas and Jhosuan Lopez provided one goal each.


The Trojans had an easy time in disposing of DePue/Hall, 7-0, on Aug. 31 at the MHS field. Mendota scored all of its goals in the first half.

Diaz led the way with three goals, while Johan Cortez and David Casas provided two goals apiece.


Mendota remained unbeaten on the season (8-0-1) after a 7-0 shutout over Orion on Sept. 1 at the MHS field.

Cesar Casas topped the Trojans in goals with three. Diaz sent home a pair of goals, while David Casas and Izaiah Nanez each added one goal.

Cortez picked up two assists and Orozco had one.


Mendota’s junior varsity team posted three wins and one tie to claim first place in the Oregon JV Tournament on Sept. 2.

The Trojans had wins of 3-0 over Dixon, 2-0 over DeKalb and 4-0 over Oregon, while they tied Woodstock, 0-0.

Goals and assists for Mendota went to Luis Ramirez (3 goals), Aden Castle (2 goals, 1 assist), Cole Kleckner (1 assist), Jamal Lesley (2 goals), Ozzy Arteaga (1 assist), Samuel Matura (1 goal, 2 assists), Jhosuan Lopez (1 assist) and Jose Hernandez (1 goal).
