Three days after having its worst outing of the season, the Mendota varsity golf team turned in its best performance of the season by firing a sizzling 167 to defeat LaSalle-Peru (179) on Sept. 14 at the Mendota Golf Club.

Three days after having its worst outing of the season, the Mendota varsity golf team turned in its best performance of the season by firing a sizzling 167 to defeat LaSalle-Peru (179) on Sept. 14 at the Mendota Golf Club.

Sam Becker led the way for the Trojans with a 38 to claim meet medalist honors. The rest of the MHS players kept their scores in the 40s. They included Taylor Joyce (40), Austin Robinson (43), Owen Wixom (46), Zeke Hessenberger (48) and Mason Schuhler (48).

Mendota bested L-P in the junior varsity meet, 203-225. The Trojans’ freshman-sophomore team was also thrown into the mix and shot a 219.

Mendota’s Luke Ross, playing for the freshman-sophomores, had the low score among all golfers with a 46. Also competing for the F-S Trojans were Noah DeLong (55), Mateo Escatel (57), John Buchanan (61), Kody Becket (66) and Shea Doughty (67).

The MHS junior varsity lineup was comprised of Tristan Joyce (49), Colton Scheppers (49), Jack Beetz (51), Eli Otterbach (54), Tony Aughenbaugh (54) and Lane Howard (65).

Mendota’s varsity squad finished third in the nine-team Princeton Invitational on Sept. 16. Bureau Valley easily claimed the team title with a 324, while Rochelle had a 341 and the Trojans carded a 342. The rest of the standings included Princeton (345), St. Bede (355), Rock Falls (358), IVC (361), Kewanee (385) and Hall (405).

Hessenberger was the low scorer for the Trojans with an 81, which was good enough for sixth place in the individual standings. Taylor Joyce was second among Mendota competitors with an 85, followed by Robinson (86), Becker (90), Schuhler (92) and Wixom (105).

Hunter Metille of IVC claimed the individual championship with a 74.
