MHS golfers take out 2 BNC foes

The Mendota Trojan varsity golf team kept up its winning ways, including victories over a pair of Big Northern Conference opponents.

The Trojans shot a 172 to win at Rock Falls on Sept. 15. Rock Falls only had three golfers.

Logan Brandner led the charge for Mendota with a low round of 40 and was the meet medalist. Jack Beetz wasn’t far behind with a 42, while Ethan Hanaman carded a 44. The rest of the Trojan lineup consisted of Clayton Buffington (46), Owen Aughenbaugh (49) and Mateo Escatel (57).

Mendota claimed a 202-219 triumph in the junior varsity match.

MHS’s Braden McPheeters captured meet medalist honors with a 46. He was followed by Drake Dennis (49), Kody Becket (53), Xzavior Orozco (54), Dominik Stamberger (55) and Cale Strouss (55).

The varsity Trojans had an easy time in dispatching Oregon, 173-202, on Sept. 16 at the Mendota Golf Club.

Hanaman shot a sizzling round of 38 to lead the Trojans and earn meet medalist honors. Beetz and Buffington tied at 44, while Brandner (47), Dennis (48) and Aughenbaugh (52) completed the lineup card.

Mendota’s junior varsity squad cruised to a 191-230 victory over Oregon.

Escatel was the medalist with a 45. Also landing in the 40s were Orozco (47) and Becket (49). McPheeters (50), Strouss (51) and Stamberger (54) also competed for the Trojans.

Seven freshman-sophomore golfers also played a round of 9 holes for Mendota. They were Cayden Escatel (50), Jack Mikolasek (52), Connor Egler (54), Kasen Novak (61), Jace Baird (62), Sam Christmann (69) and Haden Shakespeare (73).

The Trojan varsity took second in a triangular at Spring Creek in Spring Valley on Sept. 21. Seneca fired a 179 to edge Mendota by one stroke, while Hall carded a 187.

Hanaman continued his quality play by shooting a 36 to claim meet medalist. It was his low round of the season. Brandner finished second for MHS with a 46, while Beetz and Buffington each had 49s. Dennis (51) and Escatel (54) rounded out the lineup card.

Mendota came out on top in the junior varsity match. The Trojans totaled a 195, followed by Seneca at 201 and Hall at 233.

Aughenbaugh and Orozco each had the low round among all golfers with a 47. Also competing for the Trojans were McPheeters (50), Liam McGann (51), Strouss (56) and Stamberger (57).
