MENDOTA – Mendota took advantage of wildness by Riverdale pitchers to claim an 8-3 win in its opening game of the Mendota Class 2A Regional Softball Tournament on May 15 at the MHS field.

Of the eight runs Mendota scored, seven of them crossed the plate either by a wild pitch or passed ball. The Lady Trojans also benefited from six walks and three hit batters by Lady Ram hurlers.

Mendota, which was the visiting team because of a lower seed than Riverdale, broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third with three runs. Larkin O’Donnell led off with a walk and Alex Barrera laid down a perfect bunt that went for a single. One out later, Jenna O’Donnell also had an infield single to load the bases. Both O’Donnells and Barrera all scored on wild pitches.

Riverdale quickly responded with three unearned runs in the bottom of the third, but Mendota scored once in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. Eve Herbert coaxed a lead-off walk, went to second on a passed ball and scored on two wild pitches.

The Lady Trojans put the game out of reach with a four-run sixth inning. Three runs scored on passed balls and the other came in on a sacrifice fly by Jenna O’Donnell.

Mendota had just four singles in the contest, while Riverdale totaled six hits off of winning pitcher Mary DeFore. DeFore went the distance, allowing one walk and no earned runs. Aside from the third inning, the Lady Rams only managed to get one baserunner as far as third base.
