Despite missing two starters, the Mendota Lady Trojans turned in an impressive 57-54 overtime win over Plano on Dec. 12 at Plano.

“This was a huge short-handed win against a pretty good Plano team,” said MHS coach John Hansen. “Alex Barrera and Abby Phalen were both out sick and everyone stepped up.”

Mendota was down 32-28 at the half, but caught up in the second half to force overtime, where it outscored the home team, 9-6.

Freshman Amellia Bromenschenkel carried the load as she poured in 29 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and had 10 steals. Brandy Delao helped out with nine tallies, while Larkin O’Donnell contributed seven points.

The Lady Trojans went on the road again in the hostile environment of LaSalle-Peru and came away with another victory, 46-44, on Dec. 14.

“Another huge effort in a big win,” noted Hansen. “Another game that we weren’t supposed to win. Our defense was intense and our offense moved the ball well.”

After holding a 25-19 halftime lead, the Lady Trojans found themselves trailing 33-30 heading to the fourth frame, where they caught and passed L-P to get the win.

Bromenschenkel paced the attack with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Barrera chipped in with 11 points, while Phalen Hessenberger handled five rebounds.
