After finishing second in the Oregon Tipoff Tournament, the Mendota Lady Trojans returned to regular action and spanked Bureau Valley, 46-16, on Nov. 25 at the MHS gym.

It didn’t take long to determine which team was going to be in control as the Lady Trojans zoomed out to a 16-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Mendota owned a 35-12 halftime margin, and then held Bureau Valley scoreless in the third quarter.

“This was a nice team effort,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “We were big on the boards and ran the floor well.”

Amellia Bromenschenkel poured in 22 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and had three assists to pace the victory. Jenna O’Donnell provided nine points and led with five steals.

Mendota and Amboy met for the second time in three days and the result was the same – a 71-45 Lady Clipper victory on Nov. 26 at Amboy.

Amboy held a 13-5 lead after the opening stanza and built the margin to 14 (36-22) at intermission. The count was 54-31 after three.

“Call me crazy, but I have never been prouder of this group,” said Hansen. “We played our butts off, we took care of the basketball, we moved well and we got a ton of good looks. Amboy is just a really good basketball team.”

Despite being hounded by the Amboy defense, Bromenschenkel managed to drop in a game-high 26 points. She also led with 11 rebounds and three steals. Anna Bokus pumped in three three-pointers and finished with nine points, while O’Donnell had four assists and Jaelyn Fitzgerald gathered in six rebounds.

Amboy placed four players in double digits, led by Mallory Powers with 20 points. She drilled five field goals from three-point land.

Sandwich held off Mendota for a 35-31 victory on Nov. 30 at Sandwich.

The Lady Trojans led 11-9 in the second quarter when Sandwich scored 11 straight points to seize a 20-11 lead. Mendota tallied the final bucket of the half to trail 20-13 at intermission.

Mendota’s offense was curtailed in the first half when Bromenschenkel went to the bench with three fouls.

The Lady Trojans managed to catch up to the Indians in the third frame and the two teams entered the final period tied at 22-22.

Sandwich scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, but Bromenschenkel hit a three-pointer and a conventional hoop to give Mendota a 27-26 lead with 4:40 left. That proved to be the final lead of the game for Mendota as Sandwich scored six in a row to forge in front, 32-27, with 3:25 left.

A Bromenschenkel layup at the 1:51 mark cut the margin to three. She fouled out on a charge with 1:39 to go.

“We were not ready to play tonight,” stated Hansen. “Sandwich hit us in the mouth on defense and we threw the ball all over the place. They shot 25 free throws to our four. If we shoot half as many free throws, we win.”

Bromenschenkel finished with a game-high 20 points, while Teghan Tillman had six points and 10 rebounds. Bianca Espinoza led the Lady Trojans (5-3) with 13 rebounds and O’Donnell swiped six steals.
