MHS girls advance to cross country sectional

PERU – The Mendota Lady Trojans extended their cross country season by another week after participating in the St. Bede Class 1A Cross Country Regional on Oct. 20 at Peru.

The top seven finishing teams in the regional qualify for the sectional and Mendota finished in the seventh position in the team standings with 146 points. Seneca won the regional title with 41 points. Other qualifying teams include Toulon (Stark County) with 47 points, Hall with 99 points, Princeton with 107 points, St. Bede with 128 points and Minonk (Fieldcrest) with 143 points.

Devin Wade turned in the top performance for Mendota, finishing in 22nd place overall with a time of 23:05. Jesenya Avila was next in for the Lady Trojans in 43rd place with a time of 25:59. The rest of the MHS lineup included Gabrielle Brown (48th, 27:03), Piper Artman (50th, 27:15) and Jacquelyn Keeton (56th, 28:55).

Freshman Aubrey Jenkins of Seneca was the individual champion with a time of 20:00.

In the boys’ race, Mendota had four participants in the event. Andrew Stamberger (21:46) and Trent Stamberger (21:47) placed 53rd and 54th, respectively, while Ty Connelly (66th, 22:39) and Matthew Grenter (89th, 27:07) also competed.

Christopher Collet of Seneca won the individual title with a time of 17:25.

The top seven advancing teams were Pontiac, Seneca, Minonk (Fieldcrest), Cullom (Tri-Point), Hall, Princeton and St. Bede.

Mendota’s girls’ team will compete in the Oregon Sectional to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at Oregon Park West.
