Mendota wrestler Hanaman advances to Byron Sectional

AURORA – One Mendota wrestler extended his season after the Trojans participated in the Aurora Central Catholic Class 1A Regional on Feb. 2.

Freshman Ethan Hanaman wrestled his way to first place in the 113-pound category to qualify for the sectional. Hanaman had just two matches, but won both of them rather handily. He started off by pinning Maclane Rinearson of Ottawa Marquette at the 1:43 mark. Then in the title bout, Hanaman scored a technical fall victory over St. Bede’s Dominic Bima, 19-2.

Tyler Preston (132 pounds), Sam Lawrence (152) and Aaron Garza (195) all finished fourth in their respective weight classes. Only the top three wrestlers in each division advance to the sectional round.

Ty Connelly (145) also competed for Mendota, but did not place.

In the team standings, Aurora Christian won the title with 267.5 points, followed by St. Bede (127.5), Aurora Central Catholic (87), Somonauk (85.5) and Ottawa Marquette (80). Mendota was sixth with 41.5 points, ahead of Mooseheart (41), Amboy (38) and Yorkville Christian (38).
