Mendota native Hindle chosen as Conservation Teacher of the Year

OTTAWA – The LaSalle County Soil & Water Conservation District has selected Ms. Karol Hindle as the 2019 Conservation Teacher of the Year. Hindle is the Ag in the Classroom Coordinator with the LaSalle County Farm Bureau Foundation.

She grew up on a grain and livestock farm in rural Mendota. She attended Illinois Valley Community College for two years, then completed her education at Illinois State University, graduating with a teaching degree. She taught Math and Chemistry early on in her career followed by 27 years of Head Start in Earlville. In total, Hindle has over 30 years of teaching experience. Her extensive teaching career and agricultural background makes her an excellent fit for the 2019 Teacher of the Year.

In the last year, Hindle has been able to reach nearly all the fourth-grade classrooms in LaSalle County. She offers five programs – Corn, Wheat/Pizza, Pollinators/Flower dissection, Dairy, and Poultry/Eggs. The teachers can choose three of the programs for Hindle to teach in their classroom. Not only does she go to schools, she also participates in the iREAD program through three local libraries for the Summer Reading Program in Earlville, Mendota and Peru. This summer her program focused on popcorn.

Hindle is not just in classrooms with school-aged students, she also participates in outdoor activities and fundraisers for the Farm Bureau Foundation. You can find her at family events and other festivals such as Ottawa Riverfest, Streator Ag Days and local fairs. The Sodbuster Classic, Ag in the Classroom Annual Golf Outing, and Trivia nights are Farm Bureau Foundation sponsored events that support the Ag In the Classroom program and scholarships.

In the future, Hindle hopes to increase agricultural resources for local teachers and to expand her programs for county students. She said, “Agriculture effects their everyday lives in some fashion, so it is important that they learn about it.’’

These are just a few of the many reasons why the LaSalle County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Directors chose Hindle as the 2019 Conservation Teacher of the Year.
