BELVIDERE – It was a day the Mendota Trojan golfers would rather forget, as they finished one place out of the basement in the Big Northern Conference Varsity Golf Tournament on Sept. 28 at Timber Point in Belvidere.

The Trojans ended with a team score of 386, putting them in 10th place ahead of only North Boone, which tallied a 410. Rockford Christian cruised to the team title with a 336, easily outdistancing second place Winnebago, which fired a 351. The rest of the team standings included Dixon (353), Rockford Lutheran (355), Rock Falls (356), Stillman Valley (379), Byron (379), Genoa-Kingston (381) and Oregon (382).

Taylor Joyce and Zeke Hessenberger turned in the low scores for Mendota, each with a 96. Austin Robinson and Owen Wixom followed up with 97s, while Mason Schuhler (100) and Sam Becker (110) also competed.

The top five individual finishers were Marcus Smith of Winnebago (73), Nick Gargani of Genoa-Kingston (75), Riley Hogan of Rockford Christian (75), Adam Merrill of Oregon (80) and Kody Page of Rockford Christian (80).

It was a different story for the Mendota junior varsity team when it competed in the Big Northern Conference JV Golf Tournament on Sept. 30 at Swan Hills in Belvidere. The Trojans claimed first place in the nine-hole tournament with a 177.

Mendota’s Eli Otterbach was the overall champion with a round of 41. Next in for the Trojans was Colton Scheppers with a 44, followed by Tristan Joyce and Jack Beetz, each with a 46. Tony Aughenbaugh (47) and Lane Howard (51) completed the lineup.
