Mendota harrier Kelson takes 9th place in TRAC meet to earn all-conference honors

Mendota’s cross country runners participated in their first Three Rivers Conference Championship Meet on Sept. 28 at Walnut.

In the boys’ race, Mendota freshman Anthony Kelson finished in ninth place overall with a time of 17:43.4 to earn all-conference honors. The top 15 runners are designated to be all-conference performers. Next in for the Trojans was Alex Hermosillo in 21st place with a time of 18:48, followed by Dagen Setchell (33rd, 19:37.7), Andrew Stamberger (34th, 19:38.3) and Travis Mumm (91st, 25:19.9).

Tommy Murray of Riverdale was the first individual runner to finish with a time of 16:10.1.

Riverdale also claimed the team championship with 19 points. Sterling Newman was next with 62 points, followed by Erie-Prophetstown (105), Sherrard (143) and Mendota (158). Rounding out the team standings were Kewanee (166), Bureau Valley (177), Orion (194), Monmouth-Roseville (194), Princeton (209) and Rockridge (290).

Mendota had one runner compete in the girls’ race. Aliza Salinas-Cervantes finished in 25th place with a time of 24:41.8.

The top spot went to Olivia Thomsen of Orion in 19:45.

Sherrard was the team champion with 43 points. Erie-Prophetstown took second with 53 points, followed by Princeton (73), St. Bede (91), Rockridge (102) and Bureau Valley (129).

MHS runners competed in the LaSalle County Meet held Oct. 2 at Streator’s Eastwood Golf Course.

The girls’ race was won by Evelyn O'Connor of Seneca in a time of 19:08 on the 3-mile course. Her teammate, Ashley Alsvig, placed second in 19:38, while third went to Grace Carroll of Ottawa (20:15).

Mendota’s lone competitor, Salinas-Cervantes, was 21st in a time of 23:42.

Ottawa had 33 points and edged Seneca (34) for the team title. L-P (82) was third, followed by Marquette (112) and Streator (124). Mendota did not field a team score.

In the boys’ race, L-P’s Ryan Hartman was tops in the county, running the course in 16:29. He was followed by Seneca’s Austin Aldridge (16:43) and Streator’s Kody Danko (16:50).

Mendota harriers earning recognition on the All-County Team were Kelson (6th, 17:40) and Hermosillo (7th, 17:51). Additional Mendota finishes belonged to Stamberger (12th, 19:06), Setchell (13th, 19:10) and Mumm (39th, 23:34)

L-P captured the team crown with 46 points. Seneca (50) placed second, Mendota earned third with 67 points, Streator (82) was fourth and Ottawa (88) was fifth. Marquette did not field a full team.
