Mendota golfers have mixed results on links

Mendota finished second in a triangular golf meet at Port Byron on Aug. 29. Host Riverdale cruised to victory with a 151, followed by the Trojans at 172 and Erie-Prophetstown with a 190.

Owen Aughenbaugh and Grady Jones led the Mendota scoring with 42. Dane Doyle was one shot off the pace with a 43, followed by Cale Strouss (45), Evan McPheeters (46) and Brody Hartt (47).

Mason Smyser of Riverdale was the medalist with a 34.

In junior varsity action, Riverdale edged Mendota, 199-201.

Three Trojans shot a 50 – Jace Baird, Kooper Novak and Nick Sheridan. Alex Holland and Collin Coss were one back at 51, while Jonas Fitzgerald had a 56.

Rock Falls outdueled Mendota, 169-181, on Aug. 30 at Rock Falls.

Aughenbaugh turned in the low round for the Trojan with a 39. He was one back of meet medalist Conner Porter of Rock Falls.

Hartt was second among MHS golfers with a 45 and Doyle placed third with a 46. McPheeters (51), Strouss (52) and Jones (55) rounded out the lineup for the Trojans.

Mendota’s junior varsity totaled 207 to win over the host Rockets (220).

Sheridan fired a 50 to pace the Trojan win. Baird was next with a 51, followed by Fitzgerald (52), Coss (54), Novak (55) and Holland (57).

The Trojans picked up wins over Newman and Orion in a triangular meet at Orion on Aug. 31. Mendota’s 172 was six shots better that Newman, while the host team checked in with a 210.

All of the MHS golfers shot in the 40s, with Strouss leading the way with a 41 for meet medalist honors. McPheeters turned in the second-best score for Mendota at 43, while Aughenbaugh and Hartt each carded a 44. Doyle (45) and Jones (48) filled out the lineup card.

Mendota owns records of 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Three Rivers.

It was a clean sweep for the Trojans as the junior varsity squad outdid Newman, 192-231, to run its records to 7-1 and 3-1. Orion did not field a full team.

Coss and Fitzgerald tied for medalist with 47s. Holland turned in a 48, while Baird (50), Novak (55) and Haden Shakespeare (56) also competed.
