Mendota First UMC to host Notes of Rest worship service

MENDOTA – Julian Davis Reid will lead a service of music and retreat from the everyday stresses of life during the regular 9:30 a.m. worship time Sunday, Aug. 14, in the sanctuary of Mendota First United Methodist Church, 100 E. Sixth St.

Notes of Rest is a contemplative-musical retreat hosted by Davis Reid. It places meditations from the Bible on a bed of music in order to cultivate stillness, contemplation and creativity in communities so that humanity and earth may find rest.

Davis Reid is an artist-theologian who uses words and music to invite us into the restful life we were created to live. He is a founding member of the jazz-electronic fusion group The JuJu Exchange and hosts spiritual retreats called Notes of Rest. He has performed and spoken throughout the country and around the world, and he has released three studio albums, the latest being Rest Assured, a collection of hymns on solo piano.

He earned his M.Div. at Candler School of Theology at Emory University and his B.A. in philosophy at Yale University. He and his wife Carmen are based in his hometown Chicago. You can learn more about him at
