Mendota F-S girls go 2-2 in tournament

OREGON – A slow start proved costly to the Mendota Lady Trojans as they dropped a 33-26 decision to Kewanee in the Oregon Freshman-Sophomore Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 16.

Mendota did not score in the first quarter while Kewanee put up eight points. The Lady Trojans were able to cut the margin to one, 15-14, at halftime, but then a two-point third period by Mendota was the final nail.

Daisy Arteaga paced Mendota with 12 points, while Jenna O’Donnell added six. O’Donnell and Teghan Tillman each grabbed five rebounds, O’Donnell and Arteaga had four steals apiece and O’Donnell handed out three assists.

Mendota broke into the win column with a 34-30 victory over Ashton-Franklin Center in game two of the tournament on Nov. 17.

The Lady Trojans were down 4-1 after one quarter and 22-17 after three, but they outscored AFC, 17-8, in the final frame to take the win.

Daisy Arteaga pumped in 19 points to lead the attack. She also had seven steals.

A strong second half lifted Mendota over Oregon, 38-22, in the first of two games on Nov. 18.

The Lady Trojans trailed 16-15 at the half, but they put 23 points on the board in the second half compared to just six for Oregon.

Arteaga poured in 19 points for Mendota, while Anna Bokus contributed eight points. Arteaga had five rebounds and four steals.

Another scoreless first quarter by Mendota led to a 40-15 loss to Amboy in the fifth-place game.

Amboy led 13-0 at the end of one and 20-8 at halftime, and then pulled away in the second half.

Izabella Nanez topped Mendota (2-2) with five points. Bianca Espinoza yanked down five rebounds and Tillman came up with four steals.
