MENDOTA – The approval of several licenses and the rejection of a request to de-annex from the city were among the items handled by the Mendota City Council at its Oct 16 regular meeting.

ALDERMANIC REPORTS

Alderman Bill Hunt reported that a meeting was held among city officials to discuss the next step forward in implementing a vehicle parking sticker program for residents who live and park their vehicles in the downtown area. It was determined that the council will hold a special public meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6 prior to the regular council meeting to allow those people affected by this program to give their input to the council.

Alderman Randy Morris presented license additions for the council’s consideration. Zeller Electric and Integrity Sign were approved for electrician’s licenses, while Sicily Pizzeria was approved for liquor and video gaming terminal licenses.

Alderman John Pierson said two bids were received for putting a new roof on the city-owned building at 704 Illinois Ave. The low bid of $23,985 was awarded to Mauch Carpentry/Northern Illinois Seamless Roofing of Mendota.

The city heard a request from Eric Brown of 1907 S. 13th Ave. to de-annex from the city. Brown said since he is not getting much of the city’s amenities such as water, sewer, garbage pickup and leaf pickup, he would like for his property to be de-annexed from the city.

Mayor David Boelk said Brown is getting police and fire services from the city, and added that traditionally it has not been the city’s practice to allow de-annexation. A motion was made to decline the request and it was unanimously approved by the council.

Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick reported that the city’s street maintenance program has been completed.

Fitzpatrick said the First Avenue bridge project has been put on hold and a decision will be made about whether to begin digging up the bridge this fall or waiting until the spring.

Fitzpatrick added that the East Main Street project should be completed sometime in November.

Mayor Boelk offered wishes for a safe and happy Halloween. Trick or treat hours in Mendota will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m.
