MENDOTA – The Mendota City Council heard a report from a member of the North Central Illinois Council of Governments at its Sept. 18 regular meeting.

Kevin Lindeman attended the council meeting to give a brief overview of what NCICG does and how it helps communities like Mendota. NCICG is a regional planning agency located in Ottawa. The organization has been providing planning, technical assistance, and grant writing services to counties, townships, and communities since 1979. Its mission is “To meet the needs of local officials by helping improve and strengthen their communities and the region.”

Lindeman said one of NCICG’s specialties is grant-writing. He informed council members that often there is a short window from when the grant is available and when the grant request needs to be submitted for consideration, usually between 60-90 days.

The city of Mendota has used NCICG’s services in the past. NCICG offers primary community development services in six counties in North Central Illinois. These include Bureau, Grundy, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam and Stark counties. Service is also available to communities in surrounding DeKalb, Kendall and Lee counties.

ALDERMANIC REPORTS

Alderman Walt Weiland issued his annual reminder to homeowners in Mendota that if they are leaving their homes for the winter or an extended period of time, to shut off the water supply at the main so as to avoid any pipe breaks that could flood the home.

Also, Weiland said now is the perfect time to insulate indoor pipes for winter if they are prone to freeze.

In action from Alderman Bill Hunt’s report, the council approved a three-year contract agreement with Local 150, which comprises members of the Street and Water departments.

The council approved the purchase of a mobile command center for the Mendota Police Department at a cost of $7,150. The measurements of the command center will be 7.5’x24’.

Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick said work has begun on the First Avenue bridge project.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Monday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
