HENRY - University of Illinois Extension is offering a Master Gardener Webinar Training Program that will be held Jan. 23 through April 3. The training sessions will be every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marshall-Putnam Extension Office in Henry.

The classes will be conducted via live webinars taught by Extension Horticulture Educators. Extension Master Gardeners will also be present to assist and guide the discussions and answer questions.

Seating is limited. The application/payment and required screening process must be completed by Jan. 12. Interviews will be conducted the week of Jan. 15 to determine final approval for applicants. The cost of the program is $250 per person, which includes the training manual, educational materials and supplies for the 11-week class. Participants must be willing to provide a minimum of 60 hours of approved volunteer service to complete the internship process following the training class.

To reserve a seat in the class, please call the Marshall-Putnam Extension Office at (309) 364-2356 or request an application online at http://go.illinois.edu/MasterGardenerTraining.

Jill Guynn, county director, said that participants come from all walks of life. “The common interest is gardening, indoors and outdoors. This is a great way to connect with others who have similar interests and it is a way to give back to your community by doing something that you enjoy,” she noted. “Many times we have city workers, park districts or community groups who sponsor a participant so they can be certified to help with special projects in those towns or for the groups.”

Class topics include botany, soils and fertility, trees and shrubs, organic gardening, vegetables, fruits, insect identification and control, turf grass management, annuals & perennials, disease diagnosis and control, pesticide safety, University of Illinois resources, and more.

Anyone with questions or to reserve a seat in the class, please call the Marshall-Putnam Extension Office at (309) 364-2356. If you need a reasonable accommodation, please indicate that when registering.
