DE KALB - Maria Komitas, 90, passed away in her homeland of Greece on Nov. 16, 2018.
Funeral services and burial will take place in Kefalonia, Greece and a memorial service will be held in DeKalb at a later date.
Maria was born Feb. 20, 1928 in Kefalonia to Dionysios and Paraskvi Matarangas. She married Panagis Komitas in Greece in 1948.
Survivors include her sons, Dennis (Sofia) Komitas of Mendota, Theodore (Sofia) Komitas of DeKalb and George Komitas of DeKalb; three brothers, Spiro (Evanthia) Matarangas of DeKalb, Demetrios (Elefteria) Matarangas of DeKalb and Theodore (Mary) Matarangas of DeKalb; five grandchildren, Maria (Nick) Bouloulis of Buffalo Grove, Pete Komitas of Oswego, Peter (Theresa) Komitas of Compton, Maria (Theo) Eliadis of Lemont and Christian Komitas of DeKalb; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Maria moved to the United States after losing her husband in 1982 and lived with her sons in DeKalb for over 20 years. She was a devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church and loved her family very much. She will always be remembered for her quiet, giving spirit, her devotion to her family and her love of Greece.
