VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Lyle Eugene Littlewood, 87, of The Gardens in Virginia Beach, Va. passed away Oct. 6, 2021 at his home.
The family received friends from noon to 1 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel in Virginia Beach. The funeral service followed at the funeral home chapel with interment at Colonial Grove Memorial Park.
Lyle was born Dec. 19, 1933 to Harold and Rena Littlewood at their farm home near LaMoille. He married Marilyn Ruth Weinert on Oct. 20, 1956 in Dearborn, Mich.
Survivors include three sons, Steven, Derrick and Jeffery and two brothers, John and Roland Littlewood.
Lyle attended Basswood Corner School, one of the last one-room schools in Bureau County. He then attended LaMoille Community High School, where he was class president for three years and participated in many athletic activities, especially track. He attended North Central College in Naperville and continued to excel in track and cross country. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Engineering Science) in 1955 and was one of 11 seniors selected to appear in “Who's Who in American Colleges.” At North Central, Lyle met his future wife, Marilyn and they married in 1956. Lyle taught at Savana Junior High School during the 1955-56 school year and the next year, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He enrolled in Officer Candidate School and became a career Navy man. He continued his education while in the Navy, spending a year at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, earning a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1963, and attending and graduating from the Navy Test Pilot school. He served as a Naval officer from 1956 until 1978 and traveled around the world stationed at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii; Auburn, Ala.; Monterey, Calif.; California, Md.; Virginia Beach, Va.; Lexington Park, Md.; and Yokosuka, Japan. He eventually retired from the Navy with the rank of commander.
Following retirement, Lyle and his family moved to Burke, Va. where he continued his career with ManTech and BAE systems working with the Maritime Surveillance Aircraft Team and the NAVAIRSYSCOM P-3 Program. He eventually retired from the work force and moved back to Virginia Beach in 2004. He and Marilyn enjoyed gardening and won the Bellamy Manor yard of the month in July 2016. They enjoyed spending time with their Bellamy Manor neighbors and shared their 60th anniversary with many of them. Throughout his life, Lyle was always giving of his time for volunteer work and contributed to countless charities.
