Lions Club recognizes Mendota High School students for excellent academic achievement at annual Honor Banquet

MENDOTA – The Mendota Lions Club recognized Mendota High School students for excellent academic achievement at the annual Lions Honor Banquet on May 13 at the Lions Den.

Freshman students honored were Faith Anderson, Elly Buettner, Kelsey Castro, Vanessa Escatel, Paige Manning, Maya Martin, Liam McGann, Elizabeth Schillinger, Celeste Serrano, Andrew Stamberger and Allison Stewart.

Anderson is the daughter of Mike and Kara Anderson. During her first year at Mendota High School, she has been active in Madrigals, Choir, Show Choir, the fall and spring plays, and Jazz band. She was selected for the BNC choir and the ILMEA district junior mixed chorus. She received six first-place ratings at the 2019 solo & ensemble contest and earned best of the day. Anderson was awarded high honor roll and received an invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast, where she received her first academic award.

Buettner is the daughter of Doug and Allison Buettner. She has been involved in volleyball, student council, and Math Team. She was awarded honor roll and received her first academic award.

Castro is the daughter of Gerri Hanson. During her freshman year, she has been involved in Dance, Band, Choir, and track. She was awarded honor roll and received an invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast.

Escatel is the daughter of Panfilo and Vicky Escatel. She has been involved in basketball and soccer. She is also a member of the Spanish Club and earned her first invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast for her honor roll achievement.

Manning is the daughter of Steve and Valerie Manning. During her freshman career, she has been active in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Manning has been a member of Scholastic Bowl and Math Team, and she earned honor roll and received her first academic award.

Martin is the daughter of Jason and Lisa Martin. During her first year at Mendota High School, she has been a member of the volleyball and basketball teams. She has been active in Madrigals, Show Choir, Math Team, Scholastic Bowl, and a member of Student Council. Martin was a Freshman Homecoming Attendant and earned her first invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast for her honor roll achievement.

McGann is the son of Patrick and Kimberly McGann. He played golf for MHS and was active in the music departments where he was a member of Band and Show Choir. He also appeared in the spring play. McGann was awarded honor roll and received his first invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast.

Schillinger is the daughter of Jeff Schillinger. During her first year at MHS, she has been a member of the track team, Band, and FFA where she is the FFA office reporter and holds the FFA Greenhand Degree. She has also earned a black belt in Martial Arts. This year, she earned her first invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast for her honor roll achievement.

Serrano is the daughter of Mari and Leo Serrano. She has been a member of the Art Club, Trojanettes, and is a goalie for the MHS soccer team. She earned honor roll and received her first academic award. 

Stamberger is the son of Jayson and Rebecca Stamberger. During his first year at Mendota High School, he has been active in Cross Country (earning MVP in 2018), tennis, Band, Marching Band, was part of the tech crew for the spring play. He is a member of FFA where he serves as chairperson for Strengthening Agriculture, received 5th place in FFA Section 7 Agriculture Mechanics, and earned a 2019 FFA Freshman Scholarship Award.  He is President of 4-H Clarion Comets and is a 4-H State Fair Delegate. Stamberger attended NIU Huskie Hack and was a U of I SAIL computer science participant. This is his first year to receive an invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast for his high honor roll achievement.

Stewart is the daughter of Jason and Cheryl Stewart. She has been a member of Trojanettes, Math Team, and Scholastic Bowl. She is also active in Just For Kix in Mendota. Stewart was awarded honor roll and received her first invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast.

Sophomore students honored included Amanda Barrett, Amellia Bromenschenkel, Lily Linden, Ella Massey, Madi Mikolasek and Madison Pappas.

Barrett is the daughter of Jeff Barrett. While attending Mendota High School, she has been a member of the volleyball team and serves as a Principal’s Office Worker. She has received honor roll and received her second invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast for her academic accomplishments.

Bromenschenkel is the daughter of Chad and Debi Bromenschenkel. She has been involved in volleyball, basketball, and soccer while at Mendota High School. She also serves as a Principal’s Office Worker. She was the recipient of All Conference Team in basketball as well as IBCA All State Basketball Team and was awarded Area Basketball Player of the Year. Bromenschenkel was awarded honor roll and received her second academic award. 

Linden is the daughter of Mike and Maureen Linden. During her sophomore year, she has been involved in Pep, Marching, and Jazz band, Choir, Show Choir, Woodwind Choir for Madrigals, and she appeared in the spring musical. Linden is a member of Scholastic Bowl, Interact Club, Academic Challenge, Trojanettes, and Cross Country. She was awarded honor roll and received an invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast, where she received her second academic award.

Massey is the daughter of Chad and Melinda Massey. She has been involved in volleyball where she is a two-year starter on the varsity team and was first-team all-conference and second-team all-area. She is also all-academic BNC. Massey is a member of Student Council, Spanish Club, Academic Challenge, and Math Team. She was the 2017 freshman and 2018 Homecoming Attendant and earned her second invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast for her honor roll achievements.

Mikolasek is the daughter of Ray and Terri Mikolasek. While at MHS, she has been a member of the volleyball team and Academic Challenge. She earned honor roll and received her second academic award.

Pappas is the daughter of Sean and Jen Pappas. She has been involved in Marching, Jazz, and Concert Bands. She is a member of Concert and Show choir. Pappas appeared in the fall play, several musicals, and Madrigals. She was a football and basketball cheerleader, played tennis, and was a member of the Math Team and Interact Club. Her 4.0 G.P.A. earned her honor roll and a second invitation to the Academic Incentive breakfast.

The Lions Club honored Junior students Hannah Ambler, Noah DeLong and Sean Dullard.

Ambler is the daughter of Susan and Carl Ambler. She is active in Band, tennis, basketball, and cheer. She is a member of the Math Team and National Honor Society. She attended TEC and was an Illinois Leadership Seminar Attendee in 2018. Ambler was awarded for five semesters on the honor roll. This is her third invitation to the Lions Honor Banquet.

DeLong is the son of Michael and Janet DeLong. He has been a member of the golf, basketball, cross country, and tennis teams and participated in Band, Choir, Madrigals, and Academic Challenge. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. DeLong has been awarded for five semesters on the honor roll. This is his third year to be invited to the Lions Honor Banquet.

Dullard is the son of Steve and Deb Dullard. While at Mendota High School, he has been involved in Band, Jazz band, Drumline, and was a Drama Dept. Tech Crew member.  He was chosen for Augustana’s Honor Band. He is a member of the Mendota High School Math Team, Scholastic Bowl, WYSE Academic Team, and is a Boy Scout of America Life Scout. He received second place in the Spanish Regional Cultural Contest, second place at the 2018 WYSE Academic Challenge, and an MHS Pulley commendation. Dullard received Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts of America Life Scout, BSA. This is his third year to be invited to the MHS Academic Honors breakfast and Lions Honor Banquet.

Senior students attending the banquet were Peyton Baird, Katie Beetz, Preston Lewis, Abby Phalen and Katherine Wohrley.

Baird is the daughter of John and Kris Baird. While attending Mendota High School, she has been active in volleyball. She has been awarded for seven semesters on the honor roll and is a member of the National Honor Society. This is her fourth year to be invited to the Lions Honor Banquet.

Beetz is the daughter of Zach and Michelle Beetz. She is a member of Band, where she serves as President. She has also participated in Jazz Band, Choir, and Woodwind Choir and has appeared in the Mendota High School musicals. She is a senior class officer, President of the National Honor Society, and an ILMEA senior choir participant. Beetz is this year’s DAR award recipient, an Illinois State Scholar, and has been an honor banquet guest for four years.

Preston is the son of Julie Lewis. While attending Mendota High School, he has been active in football, tennis, Interact, Student Council, Scholastic Bowl, Spanish Club, Math Team, and Academic Challenge. He served on the IHSA student advisory committee, was football and Scholastic Bowl Captain, and Interact Treasurer. He received second-team All-Conference Scholastic Bowl, was awarded News Tribune All-Academic Team, and attended the Illinois Leadership and National Student Leadership seminars. Lewis is an Illinois State Scholar, an Elks Scholar, Secretary of the National Honor Society, and Secretary of the Spanish Honor Society. He has been awarded for seven semesters on the honor roll. This is his fourth year to be invited to the Lions Honor Banquet.

Phalen is the daughter of Tim and Jan Phalen. She has been active in volleyball, basketball, and track. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Student Council, Math Team, and Academic Challenge. Phalen is an Illinois State Scholar. She served as senior class secretary, was on the handbook committee, and was on the code of conduct committee. She was nominated for Girls State and received BNC volleyball second-team. Phalen earned an award for seven semesters on the honor roll and has been invited to Lions Honor Banquet all four years.

Wohrley is the daughter of Kevin and Jill Wohrley. She has been a member of the basketball team, tennis team, the student athlete committee, and the News Tribune All-Academic Team. She has been active in Band (serving as Secretary), Marching Band, Choir (where she serves as Librarian), Show Choir, Madrigals, and appeared in the school plays. Wohrley is a member of the National Honor Society (serving as Treasurer and Vice President), Student Council, Interact, Math Team, and Academic Challenge.  She is an Illinois State Scholar, serves as Senior Class President, Interact Trustee, Interact Vice President, Band Section Leader, and was an ILMEA participant. She was selected for the BNC chorus, chosen to attend Girls State (where she acted as City Treasurer), and is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church youth group. Wohrley received an academic award for seven semesters on the honor roll. This is her fourth year to be invited to the Lions Honor Banquet.
