The Mendota Lady Trojans tried to play catch-up with Genoa-Kingston from the very start and never could accomplish the task in a 42-28 loss in Big Northern Conference action on Dec. 5 at the MHS gym.
Genoa-Kingston owned an 8-6 lead after the opening stanza, but widened the margin to eight (23-15) at the break. The Lady Cogs carried a 32-20 advantage to the final frame.
“For the third game in a row our offense has been too stagnant, and I think it brought our defense down a little,” stated Lady Trojan coach John Hansen. “We’ve gotten away from the high intensity defense we wanted to have this season and that falls squarely on me. I’ve got to get back in the mood for chaos defense and turning it into offensive opportunity. The uptick on offense will come with the confidence we gain doing that. What I love about this group is that they will not roll over.”
Amellia Bromenschenkel pumped in nine points and corralled 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Trojans. She also had three assists. Alex Barrera chipped in with six points, while Abby Phalen had four rebounds and five steals.
Mendota dropped to 0-2 in conference play.

Another slow start plagued the Lady Trojans in a 49-39 setback to Putnam County on Dec. 8 at Granville.
The Lady Panthers shot out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and took a 32-17 advantage to halftime intermission. Mendota was a different team when it emerged from the locker room and managed to slice the deficit down to seven (39-32) at the end of three. The Lady Trojans got as close as six points, but did not have enough to complete the comeback.
“It was another real slow start for us at both ends of the court,” noted Hansen. “About one minute into the third quarter something turned on and we got after it defensively. I’m extremely proud of the fight we showed in the second half.”
Bromenschenkel dropped in 17 points and Barrera contributed 11 for the Lady Trojans (3-5). Bromenschenkel and Phalen each had eight rebounds, while Larkin O’Donnell provided five steals.
