The Mendota Lady Trojans enjoyed home field advantage in the opening round of the Class 2A Regional and they made the most of it with a 13-3 triumph over Byron on June 2 at the MHS field. Mendota scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to a close via the 10-run rule.

The Lady Trojans scored a pair of runs in the opening frame and were never headed. Lauren Martin drew a one-out walk and Jenna O’Donnell followed that with a towering two-run home run to center field to get Mendota off and running.

Mendota tacked on two more runs in the second. Izabella Nanez reached on an error, Zoe Hanson singled and Katie Jenner walked to load the bases. Martin drove in one run with a sacrifice fly, and after an intentional walk to O’Donnell, Paige Manning plated another run when she was safe on an error.

Byron tightened the score in the third when it had two singles and a double to produce three runs, but Mendota scored five times in the fourth and added three more runs in the fifth to take control.

In the fourth, Manning laced a two-run single and two more runs scampered home on a sacrifice fly by Mary DeFore. Then in the fifth, O’Donnell and Manning delivered RBI singles and DeFore lifted another sacrifice fly.

The game-winner in the sixth came after Zoe Finley led off with a single and eventually scored on a Byron error.

O’Donnell and Manning paced Mendota’s nine-hit attack with two safeties apiece.

In the circle, Manning worked the first five innings and earned the victory. She permitted five hits, two earned runs, walked one and struck out nine. DeFore pitched a perfect inning in relief.

Oregon posted a 5-0 victory over the Lady Trojans in the semifinal-round of the regional on June 3 at Oregon. Mendota ended the campaign with a 9-8 record.

Oregon pitcher Mia Trampel allowed just one hit, a single to DeFore in the fifth inning. That was Mendota’s only baserunner in the contest.

Manning went the distance in the circle for the Lady Trojans and gave up five hits. All five Oregon runs were unearned. She walked two and struck out five.
