Stillman Valley dealt the Mendota Lady Trojans a 12-2 setback in a Big Northern Conference varsity softball game on May 2 at Mendota. The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Stillman Valley built up a 12-0 lead before Mendota scored its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Emma Boatman drew a walk and Eve Herbert slammed a two-run homer to provide the runs.

The Lady Trojans collected five hits. Herbert added a double to go along with her home run, while Rylee Klema also had a two-bagger.

Stillman Valley picked up 14 hits off of losing pitcher Klema.

The Lady Trojans dropped both ends of a double-header to Genoa-Kingston in Big Northern Conference action on May 3 at the MHS field. Both games were five innings.

In game one, G-K was a 3-1 winner.

Mendota’s only run of the contest came in the third inning when Alex Barrera reached on a bunt single, stole second and raced home on a double by Morgan Marquis.

G-K put up single runs in the first, third and fourth frames off of Klema, who took the loss. She allowed seven hits.

Mendota totaled five hits, with Marquis picking up a single and a double.

G-K claimed a 5-1 victory in game two. A three-run fourth inning uprising allowed the Lady Cogs to pull away.

The Lady Trojans scored their lone tally in the third on an RBI single by Klema to drive in Marquis, who had doubled to open the inning.

Mendota was again limited to five hits.

Klema was in the circle for game two as well. She gave up just five hits, walked one and struck out three.

Mendota couldn’t generate any offense and suffered an 8-1 defeat to Winnebago in a BNC game on May 4 at the MHS field.

Winnebago scored all of the runs it needed in the first inning when it went up 2-0. The Indians built their margin to 8-0 before the Lady Trojans finally scored in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Boatman.

Mendota totaled seven hits, while Winnebago picked up eight safeties off of Klema, who went the distance and took the loss.

Mendota erased a 3-0 deficit late in the game and edged North Boone, 4-3, in BNC action on May 8 at Poplar Grove.

North Boone scored a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. But Mendota (13-13, 10-7) rallied with two in the sixth and two in the seventh to steal the victory.

In the sixth, Brittany Menzel doubled and scampered home on a single by Klema. Klema later scored on a ground out by Herbert.

Then in the seventh, Klema delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to put the Lady Trojans on top.

Klema, who was in the circle and allowed just four hits in the route-going performance, mowed down North Boone with three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh. She finished with 17 punch-outs and no walks.

Klema collected three of Mendota’s seven hits. Ryann Avery added two singles, while Alexis Diaz doubled.
