 MENDOTA – Two Mendota High School girls’ track team members earned places in the state meet after competing in the Mendota Class 2A Girls’ Sectional Track Meet on May 12 at the MHS track.

Senior Mari Biers qualified in the 300-meter low hurdles after she ran a second-place time of 48.08. Biers led throughout much of the race, but was nipped at the wire by Plano’s Alyssa Dolan, who had a time of 47.8.

Sophomore Lydia Willis will join Biers at the state meet after she took second-place honors in the discus with a measurement of 113-4. First place went to Kaylynne Terry of Streator with a distance of 114-7.

Biers and Willis narrowly missed qualifying for state in one other event. Biers finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, while Willis took third in the shot put.

The top two finishers in each event earn automatic bids to the state, in addition to those athletes that meet the state qualifying standard set in each event.

Mendota finished eighth in the team standings with 31 points. LaSalle-Peru dominated the competition to finish as sectional champions with 103 points. There were 15 teams in the meet.

The state meet will be held May 18-20 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
