STREATOR – It took a bit for Mendota to kick off the rust, but once it did it was no contest as the Lady Trojans walloped Streator, 49-27, in varsity girls’ basketball action on Jan. 5 at Streator.
Mendota had just two points through the first 6:20 of the opening quarter and ended the frame with eight compared to nine for Streator. But the offense came to life in the second period sparked by 13 points from Amellia Bromenschenkel and the Lady Trojans took a 29-13 lead to the locker room.
“We woke up in the second quarter and took care of business from there,” said Mendota coach John Hansen.
Bromenschenkel poured in 11 more points in the third frame as Mendota owned a 42-25 cushion heading to the fourth. Streator managed only two points in the final eight-minute session.
Bromenschenkel finished up with 33 of Mendota’s 49 points. She also led the team with seven rebounds and tied Alex Barrera with five assists. Madison Bean added six points for the Lady Trojans (14-4), while Abby Phalen handled six caroms.
