Lady Trojans finish regular season with win, 18-8 record

Mendota concluded the Big Northern Conference season with a 46-36 loss at Dixon on Feb. 7. The Lady Trojans wrapped up the conference slate with a 6-4 mark.

Both teams played to a 13-13 tie after the opening stanza. Dixon matched its 13-point output in the second period, but the Lady Trojans only managed six points and they never recovered. The Duchesses held a 38-29 advantage heading to the final frame.

“We played better than the score shows,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “We got some good looks, but we just didn’t put it in the hoop enough.”

Amellia Bromenschenkel’s 18 points led Mendota, while Alex Barrera helped out with six markers. Phalen Hessenberger paced the squad with six rebounds and Abby Phalen delivered three assists.

Mendota’s offense came alive in a big way as it rolled up a 65-55 victory over Rochelle in the regular season finale on Feb. 8 at Rochelle. The Lady Trojans head into the post season with an 18-8 record.

The opening quarter ended with the Lady Trojans down by a point, 15-14, but they forged on top in the second period when they outscored the Lady Hubs, 17-11, to take a 31-26 advantage to the locker room. Mendota widened the gap in the third quarter when it held Rochelle to just six points while scoring 15 of its own.

“We came out and hit our first five three-pointers and had four in the first half,” said Hansen. “It was another strong effort and a nice end to the regular season.”

Bromenschenkel torched the nets for 32 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, while Larkin O’Donnell provided 14 points and Barrera added nine. Phalen controlled the glass with 12 rebounds and Madison Bean helped out with nine caroms. Phalen also dished out five assists and Bromenschenkel swiped five steals.
