Lady Trojans end BNC softball slate at 10-9

MENDOTA – Winnebago and Mendota dueled each other in a slugfest that finally went to the Lady Trojans, 13-11, in a Big Northern Conference varsity softball game on May 9 at the MHS field.

Mendota took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer by Alex Barrera.

The Lady Trojans padded their lead with a six-run third. Larkin O’Donnell drove in a run with a double, Eve Herbert had an RBI single and Anna Bokus ripped a two-run triple in the frame.

Winnebago got in the board with three runs in the top of the fourth, but Mendota answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Larkin O’Donnell led off the inning with a single followed by a walk to Reiss Buettner. One out later, Herbert hammered a three-run homer and Jenna O’Donnell followed that with a solo long ball to give Mendota an 11-3 lead.

Winnebago still had some fight left and scored four times each in the fifth and sixth innings to get as close as a run. Single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings by Mendota helped preserve the victory. Buettner had an RBI single in the sixth to drive in Larkin O’Donnell, who had singled for her third safety of the game.

Mendota finished with 12 hits, while Winnebago managed nine hits off of Mendota starter Mary DeFore and reliever Paige Manning.


Mendota concluded its regular season home schedule with a 10-4 loss to Stillman Valley in BNC play on May 10.

The Lady Trojans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Jenna O’Donnell, but Stillman Valley answered with a four-run second to take the lead for good. The Cardinals added three more runs in the third and two in the fourth.

Mendota finished its scoring with three runs in the third. Manning tripled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jenna O’Donnell. Emma Boatman followed with a double, Buettner singled and Herbert laced a two-run double.

Boatman (single, double) produced two of Mendota’s seven hits.

Manning pitched the first four innings and was tagged with the loss. DeFore finished up in the circle.


The Lady Trojans ended the regular season with a heartbreaking 8-7 setback to North Boone in BNC action on May 11 at Poplar Grove.

Mendota scored in the top of the first on a two-out single by Jenna O’Donnell and a run-scoring double by Boatman.

North Boone countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and it added a solo tally in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

The Lady Trojans forged back in front with a five-run fourth. Herbert singled in one run, while Barrera delivered a two-run single and Jenna O’Donnell had a two-run double.

The lead didn’t last long when North Boone pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-all.

Mendota broke the tie in the top of the seventh when Jenna O’Donnell walked and eventually scored on a single by Buettner, but North Boone plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory.

Mendota (12-16, 10-9) finished with 10 hits, while the Vikings collected 11 hits off of two Lady Trojan pitchers. Manning worked the first four innings, while DeFore came on in relief and took the loss.
