Mendota wins two games in tourney

The Mendota Trojans’ varsity soccer team opened the new campaign with a 4-2 loss to LaSalle-Peru on Aug. 21 at LaSalle.

L-P opened the scoring before the Trojans tied the game on a goal by Emiliano Arteaga.

The Cavs scored the next three goals to take control. Mendota’s final tally came off the foot of Paco Romero.

Lorenzo Varela had an assist for the Trojans, while Joel Figueroa was the goalie.

Mendota claimed a 2-0 victory in the junior varsity game behind goals from Chris Escatel and Chris Sandoval. Adrian Espinoza had an assist. Juan Sandoval and Oswaldo Arteaga shared goalkeeper duties.

Mendota scored all of its goals in the second half and powered past Winnebago, 5-1, in varsity boys’ soccer action on Aug. 24 at Winnebago.

After the two teams played a scoreless first half, the Trojans broke the drought at the 45-minute mark when Ruti Arteaga rammed home a goal off an assist from Victor Diaz.

Mendota went up 2-0 on a goal by Ivan Figueroa, assisted by Emiliano Arteaga.

After Winnebago scored to cut the MHS lead in half, the Trojans reeled off three straight goals in the final 10 minutes of play. Scoring for Mendota were Ruti Arteaga, Paco Romero and Emiliano Arteaga, while Logan Eppard had a pair of assists.

Joel Figueroa was in goal for the Trojans.

Mendota posted a 2-2-1 record in the Oregon Tournament on Aug. 25-26.

The Trojans tied East Peoria, 1-1.

Eddie Perez had Mendota’s goal, assisted by Emiliano Arteaga. Joel Figueroa was the Trojan goalie.

Mendota dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Westminster Christian.

The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Emiliano Arteaga and Joel Escatel before Westminster Christian scored to make it 2-1. Mendota moved in front 4-1 when Joel Escatel and Emiliano Arteaga scored again, but the opponent put up four consecutive goals to claim the comeback win.

Emiliano Arteaga and Joel Escatel each had an assist, while Ruti Arteaga picked up two assists.

Joel Figueroa started in goal and Eppard finished up.

Woodstock blanked the Trojans, 3-0. The game was scoreless at the half before Woodstock drilled home three goals in the second half.

Joel Figueroa was between the pipes for the Trojans.

Mendota hooked up with conference foe Genoa-Kingston and the Trojans romped to an 8-0 victory, scoring four goals in each half.

Ivan Figueroa had a big game for Mendota, booting in three goals to lead the attack. Also scoring were Emiliano Arteaga, Joel Escatel, Ruti Arteaga, Chris Escatel and Abraham Guzman. Romero and Juan Sandoval each had an assist.

Joel Figueroa pitched the shutout for the Trojans.

Mendota finished up with another shutout of a BNC opponent, 7-0, over North Boone.

Emiliano Arteaga and Eppard each had a pair of goals for the Trojans. Other goals went to Perez, Chris Sandoval and Victor Diaz. Joel Escatel had an assist.

Goaltender Joel Figueroa stopped all of North Boone’s shots.
